Most Venerable Aggamaha Panditha Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thero, the Mahanayake of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya has passed away on Monday morning (Mar. 22) while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

The late Most Venerable Aggamaha Panditha Maha Nayaka Kotugoda Dhammawasa thero was 88 years of age at the time of his demise.

Dr.Neville Fernando passes away from COVID-19

Dr. Neville Fernando, the founder of Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital in Malabe has passed away short while ago at IDH hospital due to COVID-19, confirmed the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19.

He is the second doctor to die after contracting the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

Former Panadura MP and former Chairman of the Neville Fernando Hospital and South Asia Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) succumbed to the COVID virus at the IDH Hospital last evening. He was 89 years.

He was treated at the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital for the infection and was later admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital on Tuesday for further treatment.

Dr. Fernando died while he was receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit at the IDH. (IM)

Legendary French designer Pierre Cardin dies at 98

The designer who was known for his geometric shapes and motifs, breathed his last in a hospital in Neuilly in the west of Paris, said his family sources.

Cardin was born in Italy but migrated to France as a small child and settled in Paris.

He began his career in 1945, after studying architecture and working with the fashion house of Paquin after World War II. He went onto working with Elsa Schiaparelli and eventually became the head of Christian Dior’s tailleure atelier in 1947. After being rejected by Balenciaga, he founded his iconic fashion house in 1950 and hit headlines for a ‘bubble dress’ he designed in 1954.

It was Cardin, who first launched a collection with the designer’s logo on the garments for way back in 1960s.

In mid 1970s, Cardin set a new trend ‘mod chic’. This trend was a combination of forms, which did not exist at the time. He was the first to combine extremely short and ankle-length pieces. He made dresses with slits and batwing sleeves with dimensions and mixed circular movement and gypsy skirts with structured tops.

He was hugely inspired by space travel. In fact, Cardin created a designer spacesuit for NASA in 1970.

Christophe Dominici: French rugby legend dies aged 48

Tributes have been paid to “immense” former France rugby union international Christophe Dominici, who has died aged 48.

Dominici was best known for helping France knock New Zealand out of the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

A witness saw him climb the roof of a disused building at Saint-Cloud park, near Paris, on Tuesday before falling, officials say.

Prosecutors have opened an inquiry into the cause of his death.

“So much sadness. Christophe Dominici was an immense player, an artist. His sudden death is a shock,” said sports minister Roxana Maracineanu.

Dominici played 67 times for his country and won the French championship five times with Stade Français before retiring in 2008. In recent years he had worked as a pundit for French radio and TV.

His 1999 World Cup semi-final performance spurred France to a sensational comeback, as he darted down the left of the pitch and seized the ball ahead of two New Zealand defenders to score a try. The All Blacks were leading the game at the time and had the brilliant Jonah Lomu in their line-up.

Known as Domi, he was 1.72m (5ft 6in) tall and earned a reputation for weaving runs that could change the course of a match. He played in four Six Nations-winning teams, including two Grand Slams.

Dominici quits international game

His death has stunned the world of rugby. France’s rugby federation said the national sport was “in mourning after the tragic death of our wing Christophe Dominici”.

It added: “We’re particularly thinking of his family and loved ones.”

A similar message came from the other big rugby union nations. The Welsh Rugby Union said: “Adieu, Christophe Dominici… what a player.”

Former Stade Français president Max Guazzini, who was close to Dominici, told French radio he was deeply upset by the news. “I always told the others he was my favourite player,” he said.

Ex-team-mate Vincent Clerc said: “I came up against him in the past and it was tough. You felt he had this passion to win.”

Former Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll described “a French player full of flair with huge success throughout his career”.

Earlier this year, Dominici was heavily involved in a bid by a consortium from the United Arab Emirates to take over the financially troubled Béziers rugby club in the south of France.

The bid was halted by the sport’s financial regulator and Dominici was said by friends to have taken the failure very badly.

In a 2009 Le Monde interview, he said: “[Rugby] let me understand many things – respect for life, people and oneself, along with the values of humility and combat. I was aggressive and put that to collective use. Now I have far more wisdom and maturity.”

The Mahanayake of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Sect, the Most Venerable Napane Pemasiri Thero has passed away at the age of 98, on Tuesday (17).

The Most Venerable Thero breathed his last while receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.

The late Most Venerable Thero was born on the 02nd of January 1923 in Napana, Patha-Dumbara, and was ordained on the 08th of July 1933 at the Udumbararamaya in Hurikaduwa.
