British Airways’ online sale of thousands of surplus stock not needed for its aircraft caused a stampede of buying from aviation enthusiasts and bargain-hunters.

In the first 24 hours of the sale, 5,000 purchases were made, with the website getting 250,000 page views. In the first four days, 1,900 six-packs of Club World class bread baskets were snapped up.

Meal trolleys were among the first to sell out. Items from the now-retired Boeing 747s in BA’s aircraft fleet were in big demand.

Trouble is, the sell-off seems to have been so popular it risks becoming a PR headache.

While there are plenty of satisfied customers, there are also plenty of dissatisfied ones – just check Twitter, Trustpilot and the frequent flyer website Head for Points, where buyers are venting annoyance about broken and missing items, non-deliveries and lack of responses from BA and the company it used to handle the sale, Whatabuy.

“Such an unnecessary own goal,” said Nick Hadjinikos, whose girlfriend is still waiting for her plates and bread baskets.

The director at communications consultancy Kallinos said: “During the ordering process, the site kept crashing after payment information had been submitted. This was the big worry, so I put in a couple of emails to Whatabuy and never heard back.

“Then I took to Twitter and found we were not alone. BA should have spotted the problem and headed it off. I think most of the stuff was snapped up by hawks and ended up on eBay

Comments on the Head for Points website include:

  • “One of my orders has turned up! It’s missing one bit of it but they appear to have added part of another order in there”
  • “Still no response to any of my emails, and no answer on the phones. Got two items, both wrong and missing the other three”
  • “I have lost all patience with them and just want a refund, and for them to collect the couple of incorrect items they sent in place of my order”.

Travel enthusiasts

Whatabuy did not respond to BBC requests for comment. But in an email to a customer complaining about their order, the company said it had seen “an unprecedented level of demand” and processing was taking longer than usual. The company also said there had been IT issues.

Head for Points’ Rhys Jones said complaints to his website revealed obvious problems with the sale, but he still believes the majority of his readers seem delighted with their purchases.

“This sale seems to have captured the imagination of travel enthusiasts. It offers them a chance to get hold of some authentic BA memorabilia,” Mr Jones said.

That’s why John Granger bought some mugs, plates and a blanket – a gift for partner Tim. “It was curiosity and nostalgia. We love flying so much but have not been able to travel during the pandemic. It’s a reminder of our travels.

“The crockery is actually high-quality bone china [designed by William Edwards].” He paid £44.70 (including P&P) for the lot. “That’s remarkable value. I’m not sure why BA was selling them so cheap.”

Refunds

Kirill Maksaev and partner Alexander Smotrov bought £100 worth of BA crockery and would have snapped up more, had they been quicker off the mark. They haven’t got the items yet, but are not concerned. “It’s fine. We can wait. We’ve had the confirmation email,” said Kirill.

Kirill Maksaev (r) Alex Smotrov (l)IMAGE COPYRIGHThe purchases will be part of the mini-museum Alex has set up in his home – boarding passes, amenity bags, napkins, crockery and branded goods marking his years of air travel. “We are plane spotters: we are passionate about aviation,” Kirill said.

BA said it had expected a huge amount of interest from aviation fans, bargain hunters and people looking for “unique” Christmas gifts.

“But of course, no one could have predicted quite how popular it would be and how quickly items would sell out,” the airline told the BBC.

“We are working hard to ensure all customers receive their orders as quickly as possible and in time for Christmas. We’re in touch with those who may not have received their items yet to reassure them they’re on their way.”

And the airline promised refunds “for any items that are not in the condition advertised on the site”.

Would BA do it again? “We’ll consider our options once we’ve reviewed the success of the scheme and any learnings,” the airline said.

Washington:  US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Thursday (03) named her Chief of Staff, Domestic Policy Advisor, and National Security Advisor, an all-women team, which she said has the experience to hit the ground from day one.

“Leading my office as Chief of Staff will be Tina Flournoy, whose deep experience, public policy expertise, and accomplished career in public service make her uniquely qualified for this important position,” Harris said.

Tina brings a strong commitment to serving the American people and her leadership will be critical as we work to overcome the unprecedented challenges facing our nation, she said.

“Serving as my National Security Advisor will be Ambassador Nancy McEldowney, whose distinguished Foreign Service career and leadership abroad will be invaluable as we keep the American people safe and advance our country”s interests around the world,” Harris announced.

Domestic Policy Advisor will be Rohini Kosoglu, she said.

She is not only an expert on some of the most important issues facing the American people, “but also one of my closest and most trusted aides from the Senate and presidential campaign,” said the Vice President-elect.

Kosoglu currently serves as Senior Advisor to Harris on the Biden-Harris Transition Team and previously served as Senior Advisor on the Biden-Harris Campaign.

Before that, she was a Spring 2020 resident fellow at the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Kosoglu has a dedicated career in public service and was the first South Asian American woman to serve as Chief of Staff in the United States Senate. She served as Vice-President Elect Harris’ Chief of Staff for her Senate office and later for her presidential campaign.

Before that, she was Policy Director for US senator Michael Bennet of Colorado, where she oversaw economic, health care and budget issues. She has negotiated several bipartisan bills into law and served as a senior health care advisor during the drafting and passage of the Affordable Care Act.

She also previously served as a legislative aide to US senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. Originally from New Jersey, Kosoglu is a graduate of the University of Michigan and George Washington University and is a mother to three young children.

McEldowney served for over 30 years in the US Foreign Service, including as US Ambassador to Bulgaria and as Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission in Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Hong Kong and Singapore postponed the world’s first quarantine-free travel bubble for two weeks after a surge of new coronavirus infections in Hong Kong, a setback for their flagship airlines and tourism businesses looking to kickstart a recovery.

The governments delayed the inaugural flights, scheduled to depart Sunday, because of the spike of local infections in Hong Kong, Edward Yau, the city’s secretary for commerce and economic development, said Saturday.

Singapore Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung said on his Facebook page that he spoke to Yau on Saturday and they decided to defer the plan.

“I can fully understand the disappointment and frustration of travelers who have planned their trips,” he said, noting that airlines would be contacting travelers. “This is a sober reminder that the Covid-19 virus is still with us, and even as we fight to regain our normal lives, the journey will be full of ups and downs.”

Rising Caseload

Under the current agreement between the two financial hubs, the arrangement is suspended for two weeks if the seven-day moving average of unlinked cases rises to five in either city. The average in Hong Kong rose to 3.9 on Saturday from 2.1 a day earlier. Singapore hasn’t reported any local transmissions since Nov. 10.

The details of the formal re-introduction of the plan will be announced early next month, Yau said.

Hong Kong reported 43 new virus cases Saturday, the most in three months. The figure included 13 locally transmitted infections whose source was untraceable, suggesting there may be super-spreaders in the city.

Earlier Saturday, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore had said the travel bubble plan would go ahead as planned. Hong Kong has a “comprehensive public health surveillance system” and the overall incidence rate is still low, the aviation authority said.

It updated the statement later in the day, saying the decision to delay was taken “to safeguard public health in both cities as well as travelers’ own health.”

Travelers can still take regular flights, subject to the normal border control and health requirements in each city, the CAAS said.

Following the announcement, Gnock Fah said tourism authorities across the region had been reaching out to make plans for additional travel agreements, should they be made.

“Once this news came out, actually many of the other tourism boards around Asia have been very active coming to us to discuss about the plans that they have put in place,” said Gnock Fah.

“As this bubble between Hong Kong and Singapore starts becoming a bit more stable, we should be expecting more travel bubbles to open on that front. We’re quite optimistic on that front,” he added.

Travel searches soar

Klook, which manages in-destination bookings like hotels and experiences, saw searches for the respective destinations surge more than 8 times on the day of the announcement.

Travelers from Singapore proved particularly restless, he noted, with travel searches from the tiny city-state up 8-10 times versus 3-5 times in Hong Kong.

Travelers on both sides were equally keen to offset heightened airfares and testing costs with longer stays, Gnock Fah said, pointing out that it marked a departure from pre-Covid preferences for long-weekend stays. In-destination operators like hotels aim to capture this trend with continued discounting, he added.
The travel and tourism industry received a further boon this past week as promising vaccine announcements from Pfizer and Moderna signaled optimism for a resumption of international travel in 2021.
“Travel companies, the tourism boards are getting very busy to make sure we capture this pent-up demand when it comes,” Gnock Fah said.

On 14th November, his penultimate day in office, former president Maithripala Sirisena, who was also the minster of environment, made not only the Sri Lankans, but the entire world happy. He did so by signing a gazette notification that was to annex nine peripheral forests (popularly known as “pitakaley ) to Sinharaja, and made them too a part of a bigger strict nature reserve. This historic move is of significance to the entire world because Sinharaja is one of the most treasured rainforests. Besides, it is very high in faunal and floral endemicity, biodiversity and is also an important carbon sink.

A little more than 11,000 hectares as it presently stands, Sinharaja is still among the ten largest rainforests in the world. It was granted UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Reserve (MAB) status in 1978 and World Heritage Site status in 1988. The gazette will more than treble the size of Sinharaja, to 36,000+ hectares.

Sinharaja’s victory is also a reason for Counterpoint to celebrate.  Since first reporting the World Bank funded controversial road development project at the Kudawa entrance on 08 February 2019 (Volume 02 Issue 03), we have published four articles on topics related to Sinharaja in the past nine months or so, ranging from bio-piracy, impact of tea plantations on Sinharaja and nature based tourism. We pointed out the need to annexing the state owned and bare lands around Sinharaja including the peripheral forests to Sinharaja to boost the conservation drive. (When this columnist was invited by the World Bank’s Inspection Panel on Sinharaja ESCAMP project to make his observations on a teleconference call (on 29 July), there again this point was reiterated).

A development that was long overdue

“This is a result of a long drawn out battle to save Sinharaja. The first success of that struggle was in 2004, when the Cabinet approval was given to annex all the Land Reform Commission (LRC) owned lands within 500 metres from the Sinharaja’s boundary into it. But this never materialized as the relevant gazette was never published, said the Ven. Wekandawela Rahula Thera, Director of the Centre for Environment and Nature Studies (CENS) in Colombo, who led the battle against the Kudawa road project.

“As a result many illegal activities continued in and around Sinharaja and they included the construction of hotels within its frontier and attempts to build roads through the forest. But the struggles to save Sinharaja continued, and our commitment was further enhanced with each of those battles. However, we have to thank the former President for signing this gazette even at the tail end of his term.

While seeing this as a collective victory for all the activists and environmentalists, the Thera said, “The media and especially the people around the Sinharaja have campaigned hard for the conservation of the rainforest and this shows what we can achieve, if we act collectively.”

To conserve a “bigger” Sinharaja

However, the Thera cautioned, “We are now faced with a bigger problem. Hereafter, we will have to look after a bigger Sinharaja.

The Forest Department, too, deserves praise for the conservation efforts.  It has been quite a bumpy ride for its officials in the last couple of years on the Sinharaja front.

WAC Weragoda, Conservator General of the Forest Department, commenting on the process that led to the annexing of the peripheral forests, had this to say: “Surveying and demarcating the boundaries of the additional forests was a process that began somewhere around 2016. That, we had to do very cautiously as the President had instructed us not to cause inconvenience to anyone living in those areas.”

Technology was used effectively in the process of re-demarcation. Over 20 GPS maps have been utilized in the final compilation.

On the possibility of private lands being annexed Weragoda said, “Although that possibility is minimal, it cannot be totally ruled out. However, those will be lands covered with forest. We have not incorporated any plantations. If any private forest land has been annexed, the owner will be compensated”.

Nine Peripheral Forests

A total of nine peripheral forests have been annexed to Sinharaja according to the new gazette, which will come as two schedules, I and II. Schedule I, in addition to Sinharaja, will include Tibaruwatota, Horkantheliya, Bellawa, Porapitya, Ruhunakanda; they cover over 30,000 hectares in extent. The Schedule II will incorporate Walankande, Pannila, Madampe and Maithimukalana; they encompass another 5,300 hectares.

About the future management plan of the “much bigger” Sinharaja, Weragoda said, “There are committees appointed to look into various aspects. These committees will draw up a grand management plan that will identify and address all relevant issues.”

Asked about the status of the LRC owned lands that were to be attached to Sinharaja according to the 2004 Cabinet paper, Weragoda said, “All those LRC lands, too, will be annexed to Sinharaja in the future”.

Welcoming the new development Manjula Samarakoon, senior lecturer in geography at University of Ruhuna said: “About two months back, when we noticed some illegal activities taking place close to Sinharaja in Walankande area, we wrote to the President, calling for his immediate intervention as the Minister of Environment. We requested three things from him—gazetting all the “proposed forest reserves” as “forest reserves”, acquiring and gazetting all the forest cover that come under the plantation companies as forest reserves and to demarcating a buffer zone extending to one km from the present boundary of Sinharaja, to control and regulate human activities in those areas. What has been implemented today is the first of these three.”

Samarakoon sees conservation as the next biggest challenge in the future. Given the past lapses on the part of government authorities protecting Sinharaja, he seriously doubts their efficiency in managing a larger forest area. He says community forest management is necessary to protect Sinharaja.

His fears are not unfounded. Counterpoint Vol. 2 Issue 15 reported on the destruction of the wallapatta (Gyrinops walla) trees in the Samangala area in Deniyaya.

Communities for conservation

Samarakoon says”“Even at present some good community based environmental organizations are operating in many areas around Sinharaja. They are very vigilant and active. They do a lot of good work to conserve the forest. They spot any illegal activities happening in their area immediately. The government should encourage these organizations and involve them in conservation work.”

Sampath de A. Goonathilake, Senior Programme Officer (Biodiversity), IUCN spoke to Counterpoint on the importance of annexing the peripheral forests to Sinharaja. “Around 2011, when there was an attempt to construct a road from Kalawana to Deniyaya through Sinharaja we were asked by UNESCO to inspect it. Sinharaja’s World Heritage Site status came under threat then. The road project posed a great threat to the safety of the forest. Therefore, we asked the government to annex all these peripheral forests around Sinharaja to ensure its safety. Noncontiguous forest patches were in danger and “Mahakele” (the main Sinharja forest) in close proximity was therefore vulnerable.

Counterpoint (Vol 2, Issue 13) quoted Martin Wijesinghe dubbed “unofficial professor of Sinharaja”, as saying that the Sinharaja complex had over 154,000 acres (62,000 hectares) at the time of Independence (1948), but that extent had diminished alarmingly over the years in size, mainly due to unchecked human activities. Now that Sinharaja has got part of what it lost, the forest authorities, the media, environmental groups and the people are duty bound to protect it, learning from the past mistakes.
