Kuwait’s foreign ministry on Monday announced that Saudi Arabia will lift a years-long embargo on Qatar, opening its air and land borders in the first steps toward ending the Gulf crisis.

The state-run Kuwait News Agency reported the announcement, saying that Saudi Arabia would open its airspace, land and sea borders starting Monday evening.

More on Qatar crisis here.

Kuwait has been mediating between Qatar and four Arab states that launched a boycott in mid-2017.

The announcement comes on the eve of a summit of Gulf Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Saudi state agency SPA quoted Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as saying the annual gathering of Gulf leaders would unite Gulf ranks “in the face of challenges facing the region”.

Qatar has won a bid to host the upcoming Asian Games in 2030, amid stiff competition from other neighbouring countries to host the tournament.

Doha’s win was met with celebration at the Olympic Council of Asia meeting that was held in the Omani capital Muscat.

Qatar pipped Saudi Arabia in the bidding process, which has never hosted the games.

Doha hosted the Asian Games in 2006, while the 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar.

The two Gulf states, along with the UAE, have both competed to become regional sporting hubs.

The next Asian Games editions will be held in 2022 in Hangzhou, China, and in 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The announcement comes as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are expected to bury the hatchet after a three-year dispute that has seen Riyadh and its regional allies impose an illegal blockade on Qatar.

Recent reports suggest the GCC member states are all in agreement to end the Gulf crisis, with a positive result expected ahead of the summit in January.

Al-Rayyan, Qatar: Qatar will launch its latest completed World Cup stadium with a domestic fixture at which half of tickets will be reserved for fans who have recovered from coronavirus, the country’s FA said Monday.

The Al-Rayyan Venue, the third new stadium to be completed ahead of 2022, will host the domestic Amir Cup final on December 18 and will welcome around half of its 40,000 capacity.

“Anyone who enters the stadium must return either a negative Covid-19 test or a positive Covid-19 antibodies test,” Abdul Wahab al-Musleh, Qatar’s deputy chief medical officer, said in a statement issued by the QFA.

“About 50 percent of the available seats will be allocated to people who have previously contracted the virus.”

Fans will be required to undergo tests at one of three locations where their ticket application will be linked to their national identity cards and phone number.

Fans will then be eligible for a non-transferable ticket once they receive the required test result.

Once inside, fans will be required to wear a mask, show their contact tracing app, and stay in their allocated seat.

“This is the first time Qatar has hosted a match on this scale under such exceptional circumstances,” added Musleh.

Qatar has slowly been welcoming fans back to stadiums, permitting attendances of up to 30 percent in the top-flight Qatar Stars League.

The Amir Cup final will see favourites Al-Sadd, coached by Spain legend Xavi Hernandez, take on minnows Al-Arabi.

Al-Rayyan, located 24 kilometres (15 miles) west of the capital Doha, will host seven matches during Qatar 2022 up to and including the round of 16 stage.

Its glowing facade will feature patterns suggestive of Qatari themes including the importance of family, the desert, and local flora and fauna.

Qatar has so far inaugurated new-build Al-Janoub and Education City stadiums alongside the refurbished Khalifa ground.

After Al-Rayyan opens, only Lusail, Al-Bayt, Ras Abu Aboud and Thumama stadiums remain to be opened.

World Cup 2022 chief executive Nasser al-Khater said recently that all of the stadiums should be complete by the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022.

Qatar last week marked 10 years since it was named host of the 2022 tournament.

Qatar says it has identified the parents of a baby who was abandoned last month in a bin at Doha’s airport.

A woman from “an Asian country” fled abroad after dumping the infant, public prosecutors said, adding that efforts were under way to extradite her.

A DNA test confirmed that an Asian man was the father, they added.

The prosecutors said officials had also been charged over the invasive exams carried out on women passengers during the initial search for the mother.

There was international outrage after a group of women flying to Sydney – including citizens of Australia, the UK and New Zealand – complained that they were checked for evidence that they had recently given birth.

Qatar’s government said the incident began after a newborn baby girl was found in a plastic bag in a rubbish bin at Hamad International Airport’s departures lounge on 2 October. The discovery triggered an immediate search for the parents, including on 10 planes in the vicinity.

Several women on board a Sydney-bound Qatar Airways flight said they were ordered to disembark, taken to ambulances on the tarmac, and told to remove their underwear for an examination.

The women said they were given no information by officials and that they did not have an opportunity to provide informed consent.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the incident as “appalling” and “unacceptable”.

His Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani, said standard procedures were violated and expressed his “sincerest apology for what some female travellers went through”.

On Monday, public prosecutors in Qatar announced that they had filed criminal charges against a number of employees working in the airport security department.

The officers had broken the law “by summoning female medical staff to conduct external examinations of some female passengers”, and faced up to three years in prison if convicted, a statement said.

The prosecutors said they had also charged the mother of the child – who survived the ordeal – with attempted murder, and that they were “taking the appropriate legal action within the international judicial co-operation to arrest the fugitive”.

She faces up to 15 years in prison if she is extradited and convicted.

“Investigations revealed that the infant’s mother, who holds the nationality of an Asian country, had a relationship with another person of the nationality of one of the Asian countries,” the statement said.

“The father of the infant admitted he had a relationship with the infant’s mother, and that she had sent him a message and a photo of the newborn infant immediately after her birth,” it added.

“The letter included her saying that she had [abandoned] the infant she had given birth to and fled to her country.”

It is understood that the father is still in Qatar. It is not clear whether he faces any charges.

The baby is being taken care of by Qatari authorities.
